Carved from a single piece of Belian (Borneo Ironwood). Belian is one of the world's densest, most rot-resistant timbers. Its incredible weight and resilience allow it to survive the humid rainforest environment for centuries, developing the deep, weather-beaten grey patina visible here.
The central column of stacked figures depicts powerful animal motifs crucial to Dayak cosmology. The top and bottom four-legged creatures represent the Aso (the mythical dragon-dog), a highly revered protective entity. The central figure depicts a stylized bird, likely the Kenyalang (Rhinoceros Hornbill), which acts as a sacred messenger between humans and the spirit world.
The two vertical borders featuring tightly curling, interlocking vine tendrils are classic Orang Ulu motifs. This design represents the tangled vines of the Borneo rainforest, symbolizing interconnected life, growth, and cosmic balance.
Doors of this style were positioned at the entrance of individual family quarters or the chief’s section within a communal longhouse. The vertical layering of the hornbill and aso served a dual purpose: displaying the high social status of the household while acting as a spiritual shield to ward off malicious spirits and negative energy.
