Workshop Wednesday: Should You Oil Teak Every Year? The Truth About Over-Oiling
Many homeowners assume teak must be oiled regularly, but over-oiling can actually cause problems.
Why Over-Oiling is an Issue:
-
Excess oil can leave a sticky surface that attracts dust and dirt.
-
It can create uneven coloration if applied too frequently or without proper wiping.
-
Film-forming oils may darken the wood beyond its natural tone.
Best Practices:
-
Outdoor furniture: Oil only if you want to preserve the golden color. For naturally weathered silver-grey, simply clean annually.
-
Indoor furniture with oil/wax finishes: Reapply every 3–6 months, depending on use and exposure.
-
Always apply a thin, even coat, and wipe off any excess immediately.
Remember: teak’s natural oils provide inherent protection. Routine cleaning and occasional targeted oiling are usually sufficient.
