The Hidden Danger of Silicone Furniture Sprays

Silicone sprays may create temporary shine, but they can damage teak finishes and complicate future repairs. Learn safer alternatives for teak care.

Many commercial furniture sprays contain silicone oils designed to create a glossy, polished appearance. While the short-term effect may look appealing, silicone can create long-term problems for teak furniture.

Silicone residue builds up over time and can:

  • Prevent proper absorption of teak oil
  • Interfere with refinishing
  • Cause uneven sheen
  • Attract dust and grime

Even worse, silicone contamination makes future repairs difficult because new finishes may fail to adhere properly.

For routine maintenance, less is often more. A soft microfiber cloth and mild soap solution are usually sufficient. For oiled furniture, use a proper teak oil sparingly and only when needed.

A natural matte finish is generally healthier for the wood than a heavy artificial shine.
