Start With the Largest Piece First

When designing a room, most people make the mistake of starting with small items—side tables, chairs, or décor. But the most effective way to plan your space is to begin with the largest piece of furniture first.

Every room has an anchor. In a bedroom, it’s the bed. In a dining area, it’s the dining table. In a living room, it’s usually the sofa. These pieces define how the space functions and naturally dictate where everything else should go.

Start by positioning this main piece based on the room’s layout—taking into account windows, walkways, and focal points like a TV or feature wall. Once it’s in place, you can build around it with supporting furniture, ensuring proper spacing and flow.

This approach helps avoid a common issue: overcrowding. When you place smaller items first, you often end up forcing the main piece into a space that doesn’t quite fit, making the room feel cramped or unbalanced.

By starting with the largest item, you create structure and clarity from the beginning. The result is a room that feels intentional, comfortable, and easy to move through.

Good design isn’t about filling space—it’s about organising it around what matters most.
