How to Measure Your Space Properly Before Buying Furniture
Buying furniture without accurate measurements is one of the most common — and expensive — mistakes customers make. Before choosing that perfect sofa or dining table, take 15 minutes to measure correctly.
Step 1: Measure the Room
Measure:
-
Length and width of the room (wall to wall, in cm)
-
Ceiling height
-
Distance between windows and doors
-
Distance from corners to electrical outlets, radiators, and built-ins
Write everything down clearly.
Step 2: Measure Access Points
Large items like sofas, wardrobes, and bed frames must fit through:
-
Doorways (width and height)
-
Hallways (width)
-
Staircases (width, height clearance, and turning space)
-
Lifts (internal width, depth, and height)
For example:
-
Standard internal door widths range from 75–90 cm
-
Many sofas are 85–100 cm deep
If your hallway is 80 cm wide and your sofa is 95 cm deep, you may have a delivery problem.
Step 3: Leave Breathing Room
Good design isn’t about filling every centimetre. Allow:
-
At least 75–90 cm walking space in main pathways
-
Around 45 cm between a sofa and coffee table
-
At least 90 cm clearance behind dining chairs
Planning these clearances ensures comfort and flow.
